Bi-Weekly Trade Tracker Issue 6 [August 2020 #6]

The grains section focuses on maize (white and yellow) exports and wheat imports. Exports of white maize has subsided somewhat over the last 3 weeks, which is attributed to lower prices. Yellow maize exports are continuing its strong run, with 85% destined for Asia and 15% for Sub-Saharan Africa.

In terms of horticulture, this trade tracker volume focuses on avocados and wine. With almost 80% of the 2020 avocado export season concluded, South Africa has exported 19% fewer cartons than in 2018 and 5% more cartons than in 2019 so far. As a result of the lockdown and prohibition on alcohol trade for a period of time, packaged and bulk wine export volume trends deviate considerably from the previous season.

Lastly, the policy perspective section highlights some of the latest changes in policy, focusing on the product groups of strategic importance in terms of trade for South Africa.
